They will also discover how helpful sensory language can be to paint a picture for a reader. Students will have the chance to practice writing and editing statements and paragraphs that incorporate the concepts of both precision and concision.

What our Precise Word Choice lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Precise Word Choice teaches students the importance of using the right words without adding unneeded information. Students will learn about how to be precise and concise in their writing. The lesson will also include the concept of sensory language and how to incorporate it into students’ writing. By the end of the lesson, students will comprehend why being able to write precisely and concisely is beneficial.

There are two content pages that describe precise words and what concise language is. First, students will learn why it is essential to be as clear as possible when they are writing. This is to ensure they deliver the specific message that they intend to. The lesson reminds students that readers should never wonder what a writer is trying to say.

Students will next discover what concise language means. In a nutshell, the lesson describes concise language as writing that is as short and clear as possible. Students will learn to balance details with concise language. They should be descriptive, but they should not have too many unnecessary words and details. In other words, they will learn to balance precise words with concise language. Finally, students will learn about sensory language. They will understand how to use sensory words to add detail and paint a picture in a reader’s mind.

DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH ACTIVITY

The activity worksheet will test students’ ability to use sensory words to describe their home. They will first write some ideas for each of the five senses. Then they will use their notes to write a paragraph about their home. After they complete the paragraph, they can switch papers with someone. Students can then read each others’ papers and mark where they can be more specific.

DETAIL THE SENTENCES PRACTICE WORKSHEET

There are two sections in the practice worksheet. First, students will expound 10 statements that are short and vague. Then they will read an advertisement for dinner at a local restaurant. The description is likewise vague. Students must rewrite it to be specific so customers know what they are ordering.

PRECISE WORD CHOICE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

For the homework assignment, students must rewrite three different paragraphs to make them more concise and precise.
