Applying Area in the Real World

$1.95

With our Applying Area in the Real World lesson plan, students learn how to find the area of various shapes and solve real-world problems using area.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to have students draw figures, exchange them with another student, and then find the area of each other’s figures.

Description

What our Applying Area in the Real World lesson plan includes

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Applying Area in the Real World teaches students how to use their ability to find the area of various shapes to solve real-world problems. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to find the area of triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons by decomposing the shape into triangles or rectangles and then applying these skills to real-world scenarios. This lesson is for students in 6th grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the blue box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The only supplies needed for this lesson is graph paper. To prepare for this lesson ahead of time, you can gather the graph paper and copy the handouts.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to have students draw figures, exchange them with another student, and then find the area of each other’s figures. Another addition is to have students color whole blocks one color and partial blocks another. If you have more advanced students, you can have them apply mathematical formulas in order to show that the area and the drawing are equal in area.

Teacher Notes

The teacher notes page includes a paragraph with additional guidelines and things to think about as you begin to plan your lesson. This page also includes lines that you can use to add your own notes as you’re preparing for this lesson.

APPLYING AREA IN THE REAL WORLD LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Applying Area in the Real World

The Applying Area in the Real World lesson plan includes two pages of content. This lesson begins by stating that composite shapes are made up of two or more shapes. To find the area of a composite shape, you can break the shape up into smaller shapes.  like rectangles or triangles. We know that area is additive, so all you need to do to find the area of the composite shape is find the area of the smaller shapes and add them together. The lesson then includes several examples that show how you can split up a composite shape into smaller shapes to find the total area.

APPLYING AREA IN THE REAL WORLD LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Applying Area in the Real World lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

SQUARE UNITS ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

The activity worksheet asks students to use graph paper to draw various shapes that all have a total area of 30 square units. Then will then write down how they know the area of each is 30 square units. The shapes include two different rectangles, a right triangle, another triangle, a polygon with more than four sides, and a parallelogram.

SOLVING PROBLEMS PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet asks students to solve four real-world area problems.

APPLYING AREA IN THE REAL WORLD HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

For the homework assignment, students will complete the same activity as is included on the activity worksheet. However, they will choose the total area this time.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the practice worksheet and the homework assignment. The answer key for the homework assignment notes that answers will vary. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.
